TOP OF THE AGENDA: Nepal Votes
Voting opens today in historic elections in Nepal (AP) that are expected to bring Maoist rebels into the Nepalese political mainstream and end 239 years of monarchy. The vote is set to establish an assembly that will revise Nepal's constitution and abolish monarchic rule (BBC).

The run-up to the polls has been marked by violence and intimidation, however. A Communist Party candidate was killed, and disputes between police and protestors have killed seven people (CNN). Al-Jazeera reports on heightened security measures across the country as voters go to the polls.

Despite the violence, observers are hopeful the vote will eventually bring an end to decades of fighting between Maoist rebel groups and Nepal's government, setting the country on a productive legislative course. The New York Times has a podcast interview with Nepal's Maoist leader, who says he hopes the elections will lead to an economic blossoming. He calls his movement a "bourgeois revolution."

I would be grateful if Mr Kunda Dixit could give use a breakdown of the salaries and perks the newly elected leaders would get ??

Does anyone know the donors who has funded the election campaigns for some of the leaders ?? I certainly would not want to vote anyone who has been funded by ‘dakuz’ from across the border !! :)

I just had to post this comment as one of the guests had mentioned that the UML would emerge as a strong faction. However, the current poll results are indicating otherwise.I guess that the left voters had been given a choice between UML & the Maoists. This time they decided to go with the Maoists to see if they could bring changes as claimed by them.Whereas the Congress voters seem to have stayed loyal. So the advantage is with the congress because of the 2 leftist parties contesting the elections.
The other factor for UML’s poor votes could also be contributed to the fact that they refused the maoist’s proposal to a pact.Maybe the leftist voters thought negatively about this.
But of course,we still have to wait for the final results.

Hi,
I was made aware of the ‘In conversation” through a friend and then Kashish sent us the link to the podcast(thank you for that). Mr. Dixit’s comments along with Mr. Bhandari’s on the turn out and the enthusiasm of the Nepali people were indeed very reassuring. Mr. Dixit’s comments about those who have lost their loved ones to this ‘war’ hits home, as for us the ‘war’ was/is not over. It is of some console, for lack of a better word, to know that perhaps even those people who have not directly been faced with the evils of the ‘war’, have not forgotten. I will pass on the link for the podcast and will look foward to more alike. Thanks.

I was anxious to learn about the election, thank you for the podcast.

If I remember correctly, there was about 22% new voters like Subel who voted this time. However, I was worried about all the people in Ktm who did not go back to their districts to vote. I know my brother, who just had his board exam, could not vote because he was in Ktm. I was thinking about all the young people going to colleges in Ktm who did not have a chance to get their voices heard.

I should be optimistic but I can’t stop worrying.

12 | Khagendra:

Actually, yes! This time there is a whole new generation of voters. However the turnout on the average was supposed to be around 60%,which still is not very strong. It’s just on teh borderline of 50/50.
But nobody can blame nobody.Still, the results so far are showing for a fact that Nepalese People are really anxious for a change.A change for the better, they hope & I think the comrades will really have to work hard to deliver.
The positive side is that Nepal voted & declared their frustation @ the old regime. So again let’s wait & see what happens, hoping that the people’s aspirations will be fulfiled & there will be a fresh & new beginning for Nepal.A new Nepal,a prosperous Nepal,Equal rights for all Nepal,CORRUPTION FREE Nepal!

13 | Nawang, NY:

Hey, I am just curious about the profile of the leaders who were running in this election. I have been reading the news coverage in the magazines and NY Times here in NY, but I do not know any of the candidates other than Prachanda.

Can any one suggest a link where I can find a brief or comprehensive background of these candidates?

Thanks Khagendra for the previous response.
