Arundhati Roy on the dubious trial of Mohammad Afzal

by Sarahana | December 2006

Mohammad Afzal, who voluntarily surrendered to India's Border Security Force without ever having actually practiced as a militant in Kashmir, has been given three life sentences and a double death sentence for his alleged involvement in the Dec 13 2001 attack on the Indian parliament. In a column published on Guardian's website, Arundhati Roy lists thirteen compelling questions that threaten to expose the Indian government of "complicity, collusion, involvement." These questions have emerged from a collection of essays, titled 13 December, A Reader, The Strange Case Of The Attack On The Indian Parliament, that "has fractured what, only recently, appeared to be a national consensus interwoven with mass hysteria."

The questions strip the investigative successes echoed through the mainstream media of credibility. Syed Abdul Rahman Geelani, a professor at Delhi University, was one of the first three Kashmiri men arrested in relation to the attack. After the acclaimed lawyer Nandita Haksar took on his case, he was eventually acquitted.

At the launch of the book, Roy made an appeal for a re-investigation, explaining the importance of the case that goes beyond the life of one man.
