Protest: Fuel Hike

by Nayantara | August 2006

Ratna Park saw its share of demonstrations today as 'the general public' continued to protest the hike in petroleum product prices. Protestors stopped, intimidated and in some cases beat up motor bikes, bicycles and their riders, demanding a complete halt in transport throughout the capital.

Amidst hooting and cheering, protestors set up road blocks in front of Bhotahiti.

As a part of the growing crowd, kids ran around, chanting, gathering things to add to the road block and chasing motor bikes, bicycles and rickshaws; anything on wheels.

Protestors threaten oncoming traffic.

A passerby attempts to mediate, urging protestors to refrain from violence.

Picking on a passing cyclist, protestors try to prove their point, shouting "you think we're joking" in alcoholed slurs.

A huge mob gathers in front of the Ratna park police station; loud and angry. The chants range from 'Apurti mantri phasi de!' to 'Loktantra jindabad!'

Suddenly the crowd is distracted. A motorbike passes by.

Protestors promptly catch up with the motorbike and begin to destroy it, beating the pleading driver up as well.

Almost relieved to have the attention taken away from them, policemen stand back and watch.

Someone manages to wheel the smashed motorbike out of the crowd and take it into the police station before the crowd burns it.

Back on the other end of the street, a bystander manages to receive a few wallops on his legs.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, save your breath, it’s me once again — the condescending Nepali on the net. But so freaking what?! Here’s my remark with no amount of wasted condescension:

“Good for you — standing for your rights and bringing down the fuel price.” Sounds good to our ears, doesn’t it?

In reality, Nepali danthe (डनà¥?ठे) police — the most overworked and underpaid police force in the whole wide world, because angry mobs seem to mushroom out of every bend these days. Elsewhere Wagle — the UWB honcho tries to fart out analogous symbolism - April quasi-revolution with that of recent fuel hike protest - up and coming Nepali intelligentsia or group simply high on testosterone - go figure yourself! Astu!
