*The title refers to Indra Bilas's quote from the pictorial on migrant workers in Malaysia.
I have been wanting to ask Paramendra Bhagat a few questions on the growth of the Nepali diaspora. I think he would have interesting things to say.
Lahur, Kashi or Kuala Lumpur, it is the same: money is the most obvious capital sent back to Nepal, but there are other capitals that reach home, too. It is not an exaggeration to suggest that the Expatriate Nepali has for long influenced what road the future of Nepal takes. If Motiram made Nepali the lingua franca, WWII soldiers trained and fought alongside the Mukti Sena. Now we are on this webpage, asking questions.
It is not an exaggeration to suggest that the Nepali Diaspora is poised to grow; to grow more diverse in every sense of the word and to grow into a strong economic constituency which will not tolerate being made irrelevant by the Nepali state, whatever form the state might take.
It is not an exaggeration to suggest that most of the Nepali migrant workers will be from the terai: this is a matter of simple ratios, and of acknowledging the cast[e] of politics hitherto.
The seeds of ambition of the Nepali middle class no longer bloom in Kathmandu, but are dispersed to all corners of the world.
Paramendra dai—your politics is, by necessity, confrontational, whereas Dipta dai's politics is necessarily apologetic and defensive.
For the sake of argument alone, and to paint in broad strokes—in the growing diaspora, the number of those who represent the institutional and the apologetic are in decline, whereas those that are confrontational towards the status-quo are increasing in number.
Gulf countries might be better only because they represent a better set of opportunities. Everybody has read similar stories from the golf countries—and no doubt, Nepali migrant workers there think of better opportunities elsewhere. Elsewhere, a disenchanted Bhumika Ghimire was complaining about being in the United States.
So, Paramendra dai—what do you make of the fact that the average migrant worker out of the Terai is also among those Nepalis who are the most removed, excluded, discounted from the institutionally constructed Nepali identity?
Do you think the rest of Nepal—whatever that might mean—is prepared to be confronted by a growing diaspora of Nepali migrant workers from the terai, on issues of Nepali identity? Are you prepared to be confronted by Dipta Shah, whose Nepal is necessarily different than yours?
“Paramendra …. —your politics is, by necessity, confrontational….”
That is probably an apt observation. The status quo, the “happy equilibrium” is wrong, that is why.
“So… —what do you make of the fact that the average migrant worker out of the Terai is also among those Nepalis who are the most removed, excluded, discounted from the institutionally constructed Nepali identity?”
The richest Nepali in Nepal is a Pahadi, the king. But the richest Nepali in the world is a Madhesi, Upendra Mahato. The richest Nepali in North America is a Madhesi, Aditya Jha in Toronto.

“Do you think the rest of Nepal—whatever that might mean—is prepared to be confronted by a growing diaspora of Nepali migrant workers from the terai, on issues of Nepali identity? Are you prepared to be confronted by Dipta Shah, whose Nepal is necessarily different than yours?”
I am okay with confrontations. But the next step is necessarily to forge a new Nepali identity that for the first time will be inclusive of all.
As for one person Dipta, we two get along just fine!
“When one person (no names) writes all the rules aka “Proposed Republican Constitution 2006” there is bound to be some trouble. Hello King, I guess you’ve got a partner in crime. :)”
That is a PROPOSED constitution. It comes with a comments section of its own, open to all. Ever tried critiquing the document? Have you even read it?
The status quo, the “happy equilibrium” is wrong, that is why.
Wrong in your case, no wonder you are “confrontational” …
The richest Nepali in Nepal is a Pahadi, the king. But the richest Nepali in the world is a Madhesi, Upendra Mahato. The richest Nepali in North America is a Madhesi, Aditya Jha in Toronto.
This person is after money, all he see is money money money, earning $$$ is the US of A is just not doing anything for him, and he is not the kind of person you can trust for Nepal. Why would someone keep a tab on other ppl wealth esp the rich list ?? We need a poor list …. Does this person have one ??
A basketball kept at the bottom of the pool, when released, shoots!
Why this analogy ?? I’m confused as most readers here probably are … Shoud I also say for no reason - “Most, if not all Basketball player are big, they have big P*n*s as well and “when realeased shooots” .
I am okay with confrontations. But the next step is necessarily to forge a new Nepali identity that for the first time will be inclusive of all.
if you read the so called “PROPOSED constitution” that this person is trying to shove down our throats, he has divided Nepal into percentages .. “inclusive ” of divisions in Nepal society is what he is after …wake up nepali brothers and sister… he is trying to “divide and conquer”… I’m no mathematican but I can tell he is destorying out Nepali identity.
That is a PROPOSED constitution. It comes with a comments section of its own, open to all. Ever tried critiquing the document? Have you even read it
yes, I have, and frankly I am not impressed by it. Changing a constitution is not a joke. plz don’t make writing nepal’s constitution as your pastime hobby…. Nepal already have more trouble, don’t add to it plz..

ThE MORAL OF THE STORY: ITS SO EASY TO TAKE A POTSHOT AT A SITTING DUCK (EG THE KING) THAT THIS PERSON DOES EVERYDAY.. TWISTING WORDS AND PEOPLE MOTIVES IS TOO EASY IN BLOGS, FORUMS ETC ESP. WHEN A PERSON IS FUNDAMENTALLY BIASED !! I can add more but I’m just writing ‘cause I’m free at work at the moment and wasting time.. I think I should write a Nepal’s constitution too..
Upendra Mahato, count your days as world’s richest nepalese coz I am jerkin you off soon.
Dhoti Please :)
Does anyone know what is the “True Nepali Identity”? Perhaps ppl should travel more, around their own country before giving a FACE to the Nepali Identity……
people from madesh and janjati should learn something from Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa and should read Frantz Fanon, Kenneth Kaunda, Julius Nyere and Kwame Nkrumah. and should unite to break that bahun chetrri dominations.
Paramendra ji
It does not really matter who is richest: madesi or pahadi. when you think of it Madesi cannot call themselves Indian so at the end of the day we all are all Nepali. While I understand that there are some idiots who have prejudice against Nepali from Tarai but that you cannot fight those idiots - you have to educate them.
I have lots of Madesi freinds who are proud Nepali. I strongly believe that Upendra Mahato is a proud Nepali and one thing I remember he said ” we can’t have pride even if we are zillionaire unless our country is also rich”. I salute him for saying that.
I don’t know why do you bring this up all the time.
“I don’t know why do you bring this up all the time.”
Simply because he is not Nepali at all… There in Sajha and here now.. !!
Why? Have you some inside information that we don’t know? He sounds and looks to me like any other Nepali fighting for their rights to preserve their identity. If you want to use your definition of Nepali identity, why cannot he? In all this, I am presuming that your understanding of a Nepali is somewhat different from his.
Even dark-skinned Nepalis don’t seem to think other dark-skinned Nepalis are Nepalis at all. I was trying to get on a rikshaw on Nepalgunj as the curfew was nearing, and there was a verbally abusive young Nepali man addressing one of the rikshaw drivers. His choice of salutation was, “Oye, kale.” Though he was more kale than the other. (The other’s advantage was that he wasn’t an arrogant motherfucker).
Watch your language, young lady!
The root problem is most of “Nepali” people(especially ali jane bhujne and who are abroad) are good in talking in rooms(kothe guf) and now kothe guf le napugera they are starting on webpage creating blogs, nice very nice. Get your f***ing ass out and work for Nepal. Do the work first then talk.
kina ni? mata guff matra garne ho, chiya khadai. timle gareko kaam ko barey ma bhana na. guff ali maja hunchha ni. hami haru overjanne. timi haru over-territorial. there are too many nepalis abroad for you to put “nepalis” in quotes. come here and work bhanne ho bhane ramro sanga interested bhayera convincing para ma bhana ke, dhamki dekhayera hoina.
1st: “dhamki”; If I know the meaning of that maile diyeko cha jasto lagdaina..
2nd: “there are too many nepalis abroad for you to put “nepalis” in quotes”; If you check again I meant for those nepalese (not all) who does kothe guf more than anything..(I don’t know why u take it for urslef..)
3rd: “timle gareko kaam ko barey ma bhana na”; it was predictable i was expecting it…by the way i only love to work not to brag
la la, jiskeko matra ho. I realize that people talking without much to show for themselves may seem annoying, but perhaps some of them too don’t like to brag about what they do and hence don’t mention it repeatedly, and whatever the case may be, “Get your f***ing ass out and work for Nepal. Do the work first then talk.” bhanna mildaina jasto lagyo. Perhaps you could be more convincing by initiating a productive dialogue on the need to do something rather than condemning those who are not — by what circumstances we don’t know and hence can’t judge — able to do something.
well sorry for that line..
these days when i’m going through blog sites i mean lots of u may have experienced that also, so little annoyed, nway thanx for suggestion about “initiating a productive dialogue” hope to do sooner
The other ‘not so arrogant MF’ must’ve been the poor indian migrant. And for him YOU didn’t have to think twice >>>a MF….ha.
15 incher to u girl!
The proposed constîtution is too short
What is the official language of nepal
Why Hindi?
I like to propose Nepal divided into 25 districts as suggested by Dr. Harka Gurung
Dear Friends,
Everyday we are given stones but what do we build? Is it a bridge or is it a wall.
“If anything goes bad,I did it”.If anything goes semi-good,we did it.If anything goes real good, then you did it.That’s all it takes to get people to win football games for you.
This philosophy works wonders in the game of life, too.
And at last to Dear Sarahanaji, you use slang words too easily. Is it what you learned from US samudaya :)
Nepali samudaya DOES NOT teaches such!!!
Anyway….praise is satisfying to receive, but it never teaches you anything new!!!!
Take care!! :)
prawin:
what made your think or write for that matter that motiram made nepali the lingua franca? where did you read that? maybe you’re relying too much on mahendramala — at least that was what the nepali textbook called when i was stuying in a sarkari school.
The most important thing regarding Madheshis that anyone must remember is that Madhesh region of Nepal is not a sovereign and independent of itself. Let’s take a look. Physically it is a part of Nepal currently but ethnically it is a part of Mithilanchal and was physically too a part of Mithilanchal in past. Mithilanchal is a place where most of the people speak Maithili and infact is a mithila region that ranges from Terai parts of Nepal to northern parts of India, the capital of which is Janakpur which is located in Nepal where King Janak ruled and his palace locates here. So the aspirations of people of madhesh are more directed towards the people of mithilanchal where they have family ties and infact the motherland where people share same culture, customs and brotherhood. Like People born in Rukum have ties with people born in Dolpa culturally, politically and racially even if they don’t know each other but they understand people by culture and they take no time in recognizing each others. Obviously It is a natural phenomenon supported by science and similarly one who is the aborigine of Janakpur and one who is the aborigine of Darbhanga (a city in India in northern Bihar where the great poet Vidya pati was born and is a part of Mithilanchal) and both being the part of same anchal i.e. “Mithilanchal” no one can deny the fact that Mithilanchal is our home (both people living in Janakpur and Darbhanga) by birth like hilly region for pahadis. Its therefore common the internal migration taking place in Mithilanchal (eg. Some migrating from Darbhanga to Janakpur and some migrating from Janakpur to Darbhanga for their easiness and they see it migrating in their own home). Mithilanchal is a territory that occupies both the parts of India and Nepal. Infact Pahadi people want to be identified themselves by the name of Lord Sita and Gautam Buddha in the world but after recognizing they are the part of Terai and Mithilanchal they show their their outrage to madheshi people and infact become jealous at us. Its their judgement that the people of Terai are Indians and they say it because their only source of nationalism is anti-indianism . I don’t think there is any wrong in that because that is a truth because we had been Indians for so long and only before 238 years we physically became a part of Nepal. So there is no need to feel bad for Madheshis if somebody calls them Indian because it is Madheshis right to be called Indians. If people want to hear we calling Indians ourselves, we must tell them and clear them our identity and thus fight for that identity regarding the truth. And remember Truth always wins the battle whatever be the consequences and if not we will prove it so. We are mentally and physically prepared for that though we prefer to resolve the problem through table talk and common consensus rather than violence. But it has now been clear among all madheshis that they are not going to live under such inequality and injustice and with very negligible participation in state of affairs despite the madheshis accounting for half the population .Now we have already known that we are deciding our future and our way of living.
And the Pahadis are fool to think that we Madheshis have forget our motherland , our culture and our social structure and accommodated in theirs because of their feudalistic power and threats under a controlled territory. Pahadis can not tolerate the fact of ties that Madheshis have to Mithilanchal of India. Besides they are always afraid of the future if whole the people of Mithilanchal comes and conquer the power in Nepal and they remain with nothing at all. But they must evaluate the consequences if that really does happen. And till now they have been successful to keep us under control knowing our weaknesses and fooling us in the name of Hinduism. They know Madheshis enjoy simple ,innocent and hard-working life with mutual understanding and brotherhood and thus they take advantage of our innocence and remain in power and utilizing all the resources that madheshis have (75% of revenue generated from terai and madheshi people) for their benefits alone. The reason they praise our valued Deepawali, Holi and chhat festival because they are well aware of our simple ,happy and brotherly life. Infact some kind of jeolosy is always there in their mind and they are aware that once we madheshis are given opportunity in state affairs we always tend to march above them politically and culturally.
So the problem seems to be never ending for now. We must terminate the violence and look for a happy, peaceful and successful life individually. So the question arises on how we can solve the problem? Yes, there is a complete solution for this. I will tell you. There are only two ways. The first one is to fulfill the demand that the terai activists are currently demanding i.e. representation on the basis of population and declaring the Madhesh a separate state. This only ensures the Madheshis rights and their freedom and their right of self-esteem, self-actualization self-determination and self-rule because the history has shown that Madhesh never runs for the welfare of Madheshis if it it in the hand of Pahadis. This way Madheshis can make their life better and obtain a good standard of living because their resources will no longer benefit for others except for themselves and this can be obtained through peaceful revolution and table talk. We become a part of Nepal in this way not only physically but emotionally as well but with our unique identity, our own culture , our own understanding and our own way of life with self-esteem, self-determination and self-actualization. The second way follows the first way if the first way is not fulfilled. If the first way is not fulfilled, we madheshis compulsorily but not by our will have to go for revolution both armed and unarmed and we are determined for our identity and the truth. And we the people of Mithilanchal have always remained truthful and will remain truthful forever. And after complete freedom , its Madheshis who are going to do decide what they are going to do with their land and their motherland with a distinct identity that they are not having at present. So it’s not the madheshis who have to act or suffer now. The madheshis have for now only to look for the responses from Pahadis regarding the first way that the madheshis have sought. Its pahadis who have to act now and on the basis of their performance Madheshis are going to decide what measures they will take in future and they have already pre-decided about the action and reaction. So its better for the Pahadi government to decide on time the needs of Madheshis otherwise they have to repent in the future. Moreover, Pahadi people and Pahadi government have very few time to decide otherwise they will be the ones responsible for the mass destruction of lives and infrastructure.
We want peace but we don’t want peace where lies injustice and inequality, negligible participation in state affairs and lack of self-determination, self-esteem and self-actualization and avoidance from utilization from our own resources and don’t want Pahadis representation in Madheshi areas. Above mentioned paragraph is my independent thought without being pressurized from Pahadis thought of unity in diversity but I love diversity in unity and this is the “aawaaz” and the general feelings and aspirations of Madheshi people. Hope the first way works.
Dear Shankarji
Thank you very much for your analytical article. We Madheshis are very proud to have you among our midst and have read your writings in this as well as other blogs. My feeling is that the root problem in Nepal are the naak chuches. We, as well as other chettris, newars, limbus, sarki, lepchas, all hate them. So this is the right time and have to get rid of them, from their dominance and bahunbaad. Bahunbaad does not allow them to do any physical labour.
Why should there be an economic sanction on Nepal?
•Because the kaam chalau parliament has been (and the government is being) handed over to a terrorist group of yesteryear, who does not seem to stop its terrorism at all. Funding such a government is equivalent to funding Taliban or Al Qaeda or Khmer Rouge regime, and thus nurturing terrorists in Nepal.
•Because the kaam chalau government is not acting democratically or respecting democratic values, but rather leading towards a dictatorship. Funding such an undemocratic government will be equivalent of nourishing the dictators that will turn fatal and may lead to the cases of genocides.
The Tarai was also in many ways a colony, although a better managed one. The great bulk of cultivators were always from the plains and, in the pre-Rana period, so were many of those in intermediate positions in the revenues-extraction hierarchy. However Madheshis were never part of the inner core of the bharadari, and when the jimidar system for tax collection was introduced by Jung Bahadur those appointed were predominantly the long nosed bahuns from hills. The superior status of hillmen in the Nepalese state was made clear in the Muluki Ain, which ranked Parbatiya Brahmans higher than Madheshi ones. Since a common sense of separation from the plains was the main thing that hill Nepalese shared, Madheshis were naturally felt to be outsiders.
The table below shows how rapidly Madhesh was colonized and raped by these hill-migrants vultures (Pahadi) and how they started dominating the native Madheshi population, which continues to do so more fervently to date.
The trend of migration from hill still continues. In several regions/ districts of Madhesh, native aborigines of Madhesh have been already displaced by these ravaging hill migrants, and is being so blatantly at present by these so called politicians.
Table: Change of Population Constituents in Madhesh, Nepal
Year Pahadi Madheshi
1952/54 5.9% 94.1%
1981 42.9% 57.1%
Source: Gurung, H. 1998 (Social Demography and Expressions)
As Maoists, the former(?) terrorists, are to join the Nepalese government within a week, just review few headlines of Maoists’ activities in just about last one month period. Let’s see to whom the country is being handed over. Note that, Maoists signed the peace deals in November 2006, and its 83 members first took seat in parliament on 15th January 2007.
How can foreign aids or loans to a government having no credible accountability and respect for human rights, and handed over to a terrorist group of yesteryear whose activities are evident as unabated, be taken differently than funding Taleban or Al Qaeda or Khmer Rouge regime ?
Until and unless Nepalese government conforms to democratic values, handles the grants and loans with proper accountability, respects human-rights, ensures the rights of all groups, investigates into all human-rights violations and ends the culture of impunity, Nepal should be considered for putting under economic sanction by international community and donor agencies, as remedial procedure to prevent Nepal from turning into a fertile breeding ground of terrorists.
Not all settlement is unplanned, nor do government officials make public statements about their interest in Nepalization of the Tarai through resettlement of hill people (bahuns) there…..bahuns be settled along the border.
The bahuns, being hill people, are assumed to be more loyal to the government than others who might settle along the border…..the main objective of the government’s policy to settle bahuns and other hill people in Tarai has been to change the cultural composition of the population so that the plains people will find themselves in a minority.
Hence the questions arise: How could the limited bourgeois democratic system established after 1990 be abolished ? Should not the wheel of history move forward rather than backward? For the correct answers to these questions, one has to grasp the laws of social development in a scientific and objective manner and to correctly evaluate the weaknesses and limitations of the chronically infirm parliamentary system after 1990.
It should be acknowledged that struggle between social classes provides the basic motive forces of societal development. The present Nepalese society and the principal struggle there is among the feudal, the bourgeois and the proletarian classes. All the three principle contending classes have their allies, too. The traditionally dominant feudal class has the comprador and bureaucratic bourgeoisie with it; the small and weak bourgeois class has a section of the rural and urban petty-bourgeois class with it; and the proletariat has the vast number of poor peasants and semi-proletariat with it. This basically triangular class contention is increasingly turning into a bi-polar contention after the initiation and development of revolutionary People’s War under the leadership of the proletariat since 1996. In other words, according to the law of class struggle and social development , the parasitic reactionary classes are polarized on one side under the leadership of the most capable and strong class among themselves, and on the other side are rallied the working and the progressive classes under the leadership of the most advanced class, the proletariat. The regressive march of the reactionary classes in opposition to the progressive march of the working classes is perfectly in keeping with the dialectical law of social development.
